Southwest Airlines mechanics bring pointed message to Chicago in new radio ad campaign

Southwest Airlines mechanics are expanding the reach of an ad campaign lambasting Southwest CEO Gary Kelly for the manner in which he is handling contract negotiations.

The Southwest mechanics, who are members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, have been negotiating a new contract for some 54 months, with no deal in sight. And last fall, mechanics filed a lawsuit pertaining to what they consider to be some of the airline's inappropriate bargaining tactics, including messaging on TV monitors in the workplace and letters sent to mechanics' home addresses.

Last summer, mechanics ran a pointed radio ad in the Dallas market, where Southwest is headquartered. Now with no contract deal apparently imminent, the mechanics are launching a new round of radio ads not only in Dallas, but also Phoenix and Chicago, where hundreds of Southwest mechanics also are based. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) also has its largest hub at Chicago's Midway Airport.

Southwest Airlines mechanics manned picket lines last year at Chicago's Midway Airport to draw attention to their situation.

A Southwest mechanic with 40 years of service is heard in the radio spot praising Southwest founder and former CEO Herb Kelleher for his loyalty and honesty, but knocking Kelly because he allegedly has a different definition of loyalty.

The mechanic heard in the radio spot suggests Kelly's agenda includes outsourcing more airplane maintenance work to less skilled workers. Such moves, the mechanic in the spot suggests, could threaten mechanics jobs and possibly the safety of Southwest passengers.

Mechanics are feeling particularly frustrated by their inability to negotiate successfully with Kelly after two other major labor groups — pilots and flight attendants — both ratified new contracts late in 2016.

The Southwest mechanics radio spot is slated to run through next Tuesday on three news and talk radio stations with considerable reach in Chicago — WBBM-AM (780 and 105.9): WGN-AM (720) and WLS-AM (890).
