United Airlines is least profitable U.S.-based carrier

United Airlines is least profitable U.S.-based carrier

It still pays to be an ultra-low-cost airline. That's the conclusion one can't help but reach from a look at the annual Global Earnings Scoreboard from trade publication Airline Weekly just out this week.

Among the 72 global airlines for which Airline Weekly tabulated data for the 12 months ending September 2016, three of the world's Top 4 most profitable carriers were ultra-low-cost operators that offer a dirt-cheap base fare and then charge for whatever frills a passenger wishes to pay.

The lone Chicago-based carrier on the list — yes that would be United Airlines, a unit of United Continental Holdings (NYSE: UAL) — was the least profitable of all United States-based carriers tracked in the Airline Weekly study.

Ultra low cost Allegiant (NASDAQ: ALGT) was the most profitable of all 72 carriers tracked with a 30-percent operating margin, followed by Ireland's ultra-low-cost Ryannair at 23 percent.

But nestled in between Allegiant and ultra-low-cost No. 4 Spirit Airlines (23 percent) (NASDAQ: SAVE) was No 3. full-frills Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK), also at 23 percent operating margin. Alaska recently acquired Virgin America Airlines.

United Airlines came up short compared to other United States carriers in a new profitability study out this week.

Low-fare Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV), which has its largest hub at Chicago's Midway Airport, managed at 21 percent operating margin, good enough for fifth place in the rankings. Low-fare JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) was No. 6 at 20 percent, and Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) was No. 10 at 19 percent.

Among legacy carriers, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) ranked 12th with 18 percent operating margin. American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) posted an 16 percent operating margin and wound up in 15th place.

United Airlines, which has repeatedly stated it is working to improve every aspect of its financials, came in last among the big four U.S. carriers in the Airline Weekly rankings with a 14 percent operating margin — good enough, however, for No. 22 among all 72 ranked carriers.

Though there is always room for improvement, Airline Weekly's Seth Kaplan said United States-based airlines in general remain highly profitable compared to others around the world. Kaplan noted that the current situation is in marked contrast to the previous decade, when most major U.S. airlines were, at some point, in bankruptcy.

And Kaplan also observed that legacy carriers such as Delta and United are starting to compete aggressively with the likes of Spirit and Allegiant by offering new super-low fares on many flights.
